Federalist Papers Discussing Democracy & Republic

James Madison, together with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, wrote essays in favor of the Constitution called the Federalist Papers. These essays were written under the pseudonym Publius to provide the authors anonymity.

The Federalist Papers on this page were referenced in The Atlantic article "‘America Is a Republic, Not a Democracy’ Is a Dangerous—And Wrong—Argument" written by George Thomas. The article has been uploaded to the "Related Articles" page of this section.

The Federalist Papers included here were written by James Madison, the "Father of the Constitution", and/or Alexander Hamilton.

I have used blue type to highlight the paragraphs in which Madison clearly discusses his view of the differences between the terms "democracy" and "republic".
